Info for 2010 British Longboard Championships entry

As some of you may know, the BLU has been given the right to run the British Longboard Championships for 2010 on behalf of the BSA.

The BSA, as the National Governing Body operates National Championships under ISA rules.
The basic requirements for running a National event are:

All competitors must hold a British Passport
All competitors must be Full members of the BSA for each event
For Longboard competitions, all boards must be a minimum of 9' long across the top deck of the board

Please download and read the ISA Rules 2010 version for more detail.

BSA affiliated clubs

There is a misconception that being a member of an affiliated club automatically provides membership of the BSA.
This is not always the case.
Most clubs will provide a tiered club membership, usually one with BSA membership and one without (while providing their own insurance).
If a surfer wishes to take part in National Competitions, and he has taken out club membership and opted to take BSA membership as part of that membership, they must ensure that the club has informed the BSA and passed over the fees in order for membership to be valid in time for a competition.

Proof Of Membership

Prior to all competitions, the BLU/BSA will check all surfers memberships against the BSA listings.
If a surfer is not a member of the BSA and cannot show proof of membership, they will not be allowed to take part in the event unless some sort of joining up process is provided at the event.
This is being explored with the BSA, but cannot be guaranteed at this time.
Late entries on the beach risk the surfer being disqualified from entering the event if they cannot show their BSA membership card on the day.

It’s with great sadness that i have to inform you of the untimely passing of a fellow surfer.

Tony Cridland passed away in his sleep on Tuesday 1st December. Tony was also known as `tea time tony` down at the beach and was well liked by all that knew him. He was mad about his surfing and spent all his spare time either in the water at Saunton or walking on the beach. Tony was a kind and gentle man who always had a smile on his face and was keen to help out with whatever was going on at the beach.

It is a great loss and our hearts and thoughts go out to Tania his wife and daughter grace.

His funeral is to be held at Barnstaple crematorium on Tuesday 15th December at 11.30. The wake is at the white lion in Braunton afterwards. If you knew Tony and would like to attend then please do. Tania has asked if people would like to make a donation in place of flowers, we are going to buy a picnic bench which will be placed at the beach in memory of Tony. I knew tony personally and he always made me smile, he was so stoked to be in the water or just at the beach having a cuppa. He always had time to talk to my boy Ashley and they spent many hours surfing together. You only had to look at him when he came out of the water to understand how happy it made him. We have lost a good friend and wish him safe passage.

End of Summer Ball 2009 - Cook Island, Mullacott Cross

If you weren’t there then you ought to be ashamed of yourselves it was probably the best one yet and it was great. The band JESTERBONES were fantastic.... loud wasn’t the word.... The food was superb, the raffle was endless and the beer went down well.... Everyone made the free bus up to cook island except Greg and George who obviously can’t tell the time!

As usual there is never enough time to get everything done and enjoy the night with my family and friends so GREG ROBINSON and ASHLEY BRAUNTON have been given the job of organising next years
event at cook island so WATCH OUT.........

A big thanks goes out to `JESTERBONES`, STEVE + LISA from cook island all our sponsors and everyone who donated prizes towards the raffle, and not forgetting everyone who came. I need to say a big thanks to my wife Hayley, Ashley and Lilly who sorted the bus, raffle and me out on the night.... xxxxx.

Greg treated us to a rap which was unforgettable and hilariously funny, not that he remembered much about it the following day...

The hangovers were abundant the next day and for once I was fine and raring for breakfast which cook island put on and shouldn’t be missed if you’re passing. We even had a guest appearance from 007 himself suited and booted of course... or was it really Chris Dyer in fancy dress... smart as...

Well done to all of the league competitors and all the trophy winners of 2009!

4TH SECOND SKIN/ERRANT SURF TRAVEL LEAGUE CONTEST.
SAUNTON SUN 11TH OCT.

A totally different day from Saturday, cloudy with fine rain and the surf was 3ft and choppy.

Twenty four Hotdoggers turned out on a cold morning and cracked on with the last league event for 2009 which is sponsored by SECOND SKIN and ERRANT SURF TRAVEL a big thanks to Andy Schollick and Chris Thomson.

I would also like to thank CHRISTIES ESTATES and Paul and Lucy from Saunton beach car park for allowing us to use the beach.

Mike Stevens cooked up fifty hotdogs in the back of his van which went down really well with everyone and it has been decided to do it at all of the contests next year..... Looking forward to that! Yummmmmmmm!

Juniors Zak and Oscar must have been on a mission this weekend as they finished in exactly the same apots as the day before, meanwhile in the open... Greg Robinson blew out in the semi final. Probably the beers eh mate! Too much makes for sore head.....

Well done Greg Norman and Chris Brunt for making the open finals and big congratulations also to two masters who made their first final, Andre Green and Chris Dyer. Also making a grand appearance in his first final was Will Martin, about time! It’s been a long time coming boys and it goes to prove that EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY.

3RD SECOND SKIN/ERRANT SURF TRAVEL LEAGUE CONTEST.
SAUNTON SAT 10TH OCT.

Well, finally we got a day of sunshine and waves and not a drop of rain in sight. Thirty Hotdoggers gathered to do battle and try to amass some much needed points towards their final league total.

The surf was around two foot and cleanish but fairly weak. Everyone surfed well as expected as this was a double pointer so bonus points were up for grabs. There was also an inter-forces canoe/wave ski contest taking place which meant the beach was packed but everything was cool. The day went smoothly as judges kept appearing which kept the contest flowing, keep it up guys it helps immensely.

A big welcome to Vikkie on her first contest. It was good to see Zak Lawton back competing after a long time away travelling. The Maddocks brothers were neck and neck all the way through in the juniors while in the open Greg Robinson made history by beating Ashley Braunton for the first time to take first place. Martin Scrace and Ben Keay just missed out on the masters final and Greg Norman has stepped up a gear and got into a open final again.

We finished the day off with a curry in the white lion and a few beers.

British Longboard Club Champions 2009!

Congratulations and thanks to everyone who competed this weekend in the 9th annual British Longboard Club Championships.

Hotdoggers 'A' Team took the 2009 title from Shore Surf Club with Scarborough Malibu Club in third place. I will update this post with full results and placings as soon as I have them.

The event was a great success, the weather stayed dry and the sun came out and the surf provided small but contestable conditions for us to run the event.

We would like to thank everyone involved in helping us to run the event. It would not have been possible without help from Christies Estates, VW Barnstaple, Saunton Beach car park, Surfed Out, Tiki, Gulfstream, Oneill, the White Lion and Indian Kitchen, Quay Events, Salomon, Second Skin, James Hindle, Gary Dingle and Vicki (tee shirt design and poster).

A small wave is forecast throughout the weekend so the competition is called ON! First heat will start 7:30am and we will try and run as much as possible on the Saturday in the best surf.

Unfortunately Tiki have commitments elsewhere so no board demo from them on the beach. However the club will be on the beach on Friday evening for a BBQ. Fire provided, you bring the food and drink!

British Longboard Club Championships 2009

Rearranged to the 26th and 27th of September, Saunton Sands, North Devon, sponsored by Volkswagen Barnstaple.

Teams confirmed so far are Shore Surf, Bristol Surf Club, Woolacombe, Scarborough, RN/RM Waveriders; and rumour has it Croyde will be putting in a team. Places are still available so if you want to take part please contact Norm on 07787 906525.

This is the biggest event in our calendar this year and we have a number of activities happening during the contest including:

3-aside beach football, a guest appearance from Britain’s got talent semi-finalist Merlin, loads of boards to try out from Tiki and Gulfstream, and free surf lessons for the nippers. Also on Sunday there will be hotdogs off the BBQ courtesy of the Hotdoggers Longboard Surf club.

Come along for the buzz or to help out.

We would like to thank the following for allowing/assisting us to put this contest on and helping to promote North Devon:

Morocco 2010!

Here are the details for those interested in going to Morocco on the club trip early next year.

Outbound flight 15th February 2010 - Gatwick to Agadir

Inbound flight 22nd February 2010 - Agadir to Gatwick

Average price for flights is currently £190 but this will increase so don't leave it until the last minute. You cannot book carriage of your board until December.

We will be staying at the Surf Maroc villa in Tagahzoute villiage. The price is £260 this includes airport transfers, bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days, as well as transport to the surf. For more information see the Surf Maroc website.

What a day, Horizontal rain, Saunton was 4ft, Messy and onshore, 1960’s surfboards and NO leashes, No, this wasn’t a nightmare, this is the English summer at it’s best, and the yearly homage to 60’s surfing that is the Stylemasters.

Stylemasters 2009 was underway, Sponsored by Corduroy Lines and Mike Dudley.
We had a bunch of 60’s boards to choose from, And a gathering of top surfers from all over the UK, British Champions, Multiple European Champions, Surfers from Jersey to Wales, down to Devon and on to Sennen had turned up to compete. We did have surf though, all that was missing was a 9’ performance board, Instead we had a bunch of Bilbo’s, A Dewey Webber of obscene weight, a Harbour and some other 60’s creations of heavy fibreglass construction, and dubious handling.

So the rules, NO leashes, Try and surf as stylishly as possible, Ok, and if you want to avoid a huge amount of piss taking, DONT lose your board, Crap!!

The Open went in first, With guys such as Elliot Dudley, Ashley Braunton, Ben Skinner, Ben Haworth and James Parry throwing these boards around like modern lightweights, 5’s & 10’s all over the place, Young guys like Matt Travis ensuring that style still has a place in longboarding and off the lips for Christ sake, on 60’s boards!!! Not until you try to surf one of these boards yourself do you realise just how talented these guys are, It was a wonderful thing to see and made all the better by the appearance of that rare sight, Sunshine!

The Masters category was as hotly contested as ever, Richard Emmerson from Sennen was on form and as always loving every minute of it, keen to improve on his 2nd place of last year. Eric Davies was hungry for the title, Shaun Marlow, Last years winner was there to defend his title from 2008, with Keano, Andre, Rob and myself there to try and put the cat amongst the pigeons.

The open was very strongly contested and we were treated to a nice display of surfing, Gary Woodward got a screamer of a ride in his heat but had trouble matching that ride, and after early casualties had fallen we were left with North Devons Ben Haworth, Skindog, James Parry and Elliot Dudley to show what they could do and they did just that, Increadible section making, insane 10’s,Slick Drop Kneese and Skindog pulling off a sick off the lip, great surfing and great spectating.

In the Masters we had a final made up of, Shaun Marlow, Richard Emerson, Eric Davies and myself Guy Maddocks, I have never been in a line up and heard grown men screem when a big set came through like I heard in this comp, Just the mere thought of losing your board was enough to send panic through the line up, Fantastic, what a ball. Rich was on it from the off, as if he had booked the set waves, He’d paddle in, whooping and hollaring like a mad man, Surf the wave to the shore, paddle back out only to paddle straight into another, unreal, I was struggling along with the others to even catch a good one, Eric had a couple inside, Shaun was snaffling the odd one and I was having a shocker, didn’t matter where I was, the peak was elsewhere, Usually where Rich was!!!

Underdog 2 Results and Report

Saturday the 11th July dawned and for once there was surf, Not great, but surf none the less, So Underdogs 2 was on.
Not a bad turn out, mixed bag of young un's, Old un's and a couple in the middle, sadly I now fall into the old un's catagory, C'est la vie.
High tide was looking too much fun to miss, So Keano and I went in for a little sesh, Had a few good ones and got out in time for the comp, Which I find is always a good start!

First round was in, and the guys and Girl, which is always nice to see, were surfing well, young Max Welland was going well as was John Linch and Fergus.
Then came my round, and, Oh dear, as my old english teacher used to say "Could do better", made a complete pigs ear of it, and I was out, Tim Tanton and a new face going through, Gutted.

Back at the judges van where Greg & Greg were doing there best Ant & Dec impersantion, letting me know just how bad it had gone!! Then came that word,
Repechage, comes from French, from repêcher meaning 'fish out' or 'rescue' , No!, no idea, but what it realy means is, Maddocks, get back in the water you plonker, This I duely did, and sadly, I won, I say sadly as this meant that with a quick rashie change I was back in for the next heat, and unless my maths is as crap as my english, this meant Half hour free surf followed by three heats back to back, "Je suis Cream crackered".
Ok now I have used every possible excuse, here goes.
Tim was glad to see me when I paddled back into the line up, This was soon to change, Tim, John and I shared some good waves, John surfing well, as was young Will Martin.
I then took the sharing waves to a whole new level and dropped in on Tim, Not once, OoooH noo, that would be far to sensible, Twice, Yes twice, This evidently means instant disqualification, BLATANT Dropping in Keano called it, But it did mean I could have a well earned cup of tea?
So to the final, a good line up of Tim Tanton, Max Welland, John Linch and Fergus Bradford, The guy's surfed well, A close heat with both youngsters and elders exchanging waves.

Finally enough swell in the forecast to call this on! Both competitions are called on this weekend. Entry fee for the stylemasters is now £15 and there will be no bbq after the event.

Underdogs and Stylemasters - Another Update

Hi everyone, I have another update on the rearranged competition dates. Unfortunately due to a shortage of people to run the contest we have had to bump next weekends underdog competition to the following weekend.

So to confirm, Underdog 2 will run Saturday 11th July and the 60's Stylemasters will run on Sunday 12th July.

We are starting to run into fixture congestion so if anybody has any favours to call in with the swell gods, call 'em in!

Max is the junior amongst the four and showing real promise, Ramon was firing in the semi but had to be contempt with second place. Shaun tried to find a winning wave but Perranporth local Ashley had all the best scoring waves to take first place.

The league comp will now run on Sunday because some club members are taking part in the Jesus surf classic. Underdogs will run on Saturday.

Keep checking back for the latest information. It will be an 8:30am start at the beach.

If you have never taken part in a club contest before the underdogs is the perfect chance. Previous league finalists and sponsored surfers are not allowed to enter.

There will also be a meet up for a curry at the White Lion in Braunton after the contest on Saturday. See you there!

The Present Screenings

The Present, Californian artist/photographer/filmmaker Thomas Campbell’s eagerly awaited follow-up to his cult classics Sprout and The Seedling, is coming to the UK this spring. The Surf Screen – an exciting new organisation set up to exhibit independent creative perspectives of surf culture and support new filmmaking talent – is proud to present the UK premiere, to be shown in a selection of intimate venues across the south of England in April, May and June.

Created in luscious Super 16mm film, The Present is a visual delight, filmed in West Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Sumatra, Java, Hawaii and California. Featuring a host of über-stylish surfers such as Dave Rastovich, Dane Reynolds, Joel Tudor, Sofia Mulanovich, C.J. Nelson, Dan Malloy, Kassia Meador and others, it promises to delight surf movie fans – especially when viewed on the big screen.

“Big screen exhibition of independent surf movies is a vital element in the enrichment of our surf culture, inspiring and bringing together a community for a shared experience,” says The Surf Screen’s Christiaan Bailey. “The Surf Screen is bringing surf movies back to the big screen on a regular basis and in doing so will support a stream of original content from talented filmmakers for us all to enjoy.”

In launching The Present, Thomas Campbell wants to help preserve one of surfing’s longest running social happenings off the beach: surf movie tours. Surf movies have their origins as one of the culture’s most significant cultural barometers, dating back to the sport’s fledgling years. With zero surf media in existence during the late 1950s, the draw of a surf film screening was intense. “The tremendous sense of community you felt at those shows was powerful,” explains Steve Pezman, publisher of The Surfer’s Journal, who was a teenage surfer at the time. “So for us, going to see a surf film wasn’t a choice — you had to go.”

The tradition continued through the late 1960s and 1970s. By the 1980s, however, video had entered the picture and would soon change everything. Shooting video was cheap and the filmmaker could skip costly theatre screenings by going direct to consumer with a VHS tape. By the mid-1980s, film tours faded to a distant memory as the home viewing experience became the norm.

In the late 1990s, a few young independent filmmakers began to pick up old Bolex 16mm film cameras and document modern day surfing using the old traditional format. Among the relatively small number of purists — using film instead of video — to successfully emerge at the time was Campbell. He then went a step further by doing a US tour.

“I am not re-inventing the wheel or anything, just doing what those filmmakers did back then,” explains Campbell, who extensively toured his second film, Sprout (2004). “Doing a tour is a long-time tradition in our culture. It’s also the most sure fire way of bringing the film to the surf community directly, and people love it.”

Like his other films, The Present covers several surfing subcultures. Throw in a funny skit and some exotic overseas travels and you end up with a classic surf film narrative. All of this happens to the backdrop of a timeless, down-tempo soundtrack that has been a hallmark of Campbell’s other works. “The Present is going to blow minds,” adds Christiaan Bailey. Be sure to get yourself down to an independent cinema or village hall near you…

Saunton BLU / Rearranged League and Underdogs

Norm has negotiated a British Longboard Union event to take place at Saunton Sands on the 9th and 10th of May. This along with an event in Jersey on the 18th and 19th of July brings the BLU series up to six events.

The league and underdog contests will now run on the following weekend (16th and 17th respectively).

I don't have the results of this weekends competition yet but i'll get them up ASAP.

Big Wave Comp is OFF!

The contest scheduled for this Sunday has been postponed due to lack of sizeable surf.

It's a shame the fantastic weekday surf did not continue until the weekend. I hope everyone got a chance to get in. The photo on the left is of Polzeath after my session on Tuesday. If you have any pics of you logging the big stuff please send them in to me!

Don't forget the judging awareness courses are still going ahead on Saturday. If you are interested, contact Norm and show up at the White Lion pub in Braunton at 10 am.

ISA Judging Course and Big Wave Comp

Just a note from Norm to say that if you are interested in completing the ISA judging course on the 18th of April you need to contact him. You can email him by clicking his picture in the top right of the blog, or get in touch by phone.

There is also a free judging awareness course running as well suited for all club members which will help you understand what judges are looking for during contests. The ISA course is more in depth and will get you a certificate to be able to judge in other competitions. This costs but is is subsidised by Sport England.

Well, we are off once again at the start of another contest season.
It only seems like yesterday we were wrapping up our fourth and final contest of 2008.

Thirty six competitors turned out in not so perfect conditions for the first event of the year which was also a double pointer.

It’s good to see some new faces competing. Max, Callum , Trev Garland, Ashley Lawton, Razzell Dazzel and Chrissy Dyer. These boys travelled from St Agnes, Perranporth and Brighton. We also had former British and European champion Elliot Dudley from Cardiff competing in the open. I mustn’t forget everyone else that travelled from afar, well done guys.

The swell was not good but was surfable, 2-3ft onshore and windy. Midway through the morning the sun came out and it stayed dry throughout the rest of the day. We held off the contest for three hours while the tide came back in and the surf improved, just a bit, honest! We had a very good turnout for the masters and the open with half a dozen juniors and two ladies. Perhaps when the sun comes out we will see more ladies eh.... Well done to Hazel and Rebecca for braving the wind and the juniors who could only just hang onto their boards while walking down the beach.

I`m glad we now have the judging van to use on the beach as spring tides the sea goes along way out! Dragging the old tower up and down the beach was hard work, the VW makes light work of it. We also had a set of new rash vests donated by O`Neil which we are very grateful for.. THANKYOU O`NEIL. Big thanks to Nigel for setting up the marquee which gave us shelter from the wind.

Throughout the day the standard of surfing was exceptional despite the conditions, Trevor Garland , Alex Maddocks, Greg Robinson, Elliot Dudley, Eric Davies and our very own action man Keano made it look good out there.

Once we had packed up and the results read out we headed off to the White Lion to warm up and obviously refreshments were on hand. Big thanks to Andy and Ben from the Lion for the great bbq, just what the doctor ordered after freezing on the beach all day!

Well done to everyone and it’s been decided that the third league contest will also be a double pointer so make sure you don’t miss it!

Hello and Welcome

Hi everyone!

We really want to improve the Hotdoggers website this year, but the old website design that has been around for a while is quite tricky and time consuming to keep up to date. So this year we have decided to create a blog style website. Many of you more web savvy members will be familiar with blogs, but for those who are not, fear not! All this means is that it's a lot more simple for us to keep up to date, so we can get the results up quicker, call contests on or off and so on from anywhere with an internet connection. Yay!

Anyway we hope you enjoy the new blog and we would urge you to send in content such as photos and videos or any articles or links that you think may be of interest to club members.
